Which KSEB slab are you actually in?

KSEB bills most homes every two months, and the slabs are monthly — so half of Kerala does not know which one they are in. Above 250 units a month one single rate is applied to every unit you have used, not just the ones above the line. Cross it by one unit and the whole bill is repriced.

3 kW
₹70,000/kW
Ficus normally install at ₹70,000 per kW at 3 kW and ₹62,000 at 5 kW — less per kW as the system grows. Your own price comes from the survey.

Your bill will not reach ₹0. The fixed charge, the 10% electricity duty and the meter rent stay whatever your panels do — net metering cancels units, not the bill. Anyone who tells you otherwise has not read the tariff order.

What Ficus does.

Rooftop solar from the first site visit to the net meter — and the service calls long after it.

On-grid rooftop solar

Panels on your roof, a net meter we supply and fit ourselves rather than leave you waiting on KSEB's — which is usually a month or more on its own — and your bill counted as import minus export. Sized against your actual consumption rather than a round number. Concrete, tile and trapezoidal sheet roofs — all three are in the photographs below.

Off-grid and hybrid, with battery

An on-grid system shuts down in a power cut by design. A hybrid inverter and a battery keep the house running through one; an off-grid system runs without KSEB at all, which suits a site where the supply is poor or the connection is a long way off. Both cost more than plain on-grid, and we will tell you which one your bill actually justifies.

Subsidy and the KSEB paperwork

The national portal application, the complete KSEB documentation — Annexures 1, 2 and 3, each filed at a different stage of the installation — the inspection and the net metering agreement. The subsidy is paid to you after commissioning, not deducted at the shop.

Commercial and industrial

Factory sheds, showrooms and institutional roofs, where the tariff is different from a house and the case rests on daytime load rather than on the domestic slabs. Sized against the connected load and the working pattern rather than against a roof area.

Upgrading a system you already have

Adding capacity to a working array — a different job from a new install, because the existing inverter, the sanctioned load and the net metering agreement all have to be revisited.

After the installation

Kerala dust and monsoon growth cost real output, and an inverter fault you do not notice is a fault you pay for. Service calls, cleaning and fault-finding, on the systems we put up.

The Kerala solar handbook.

The two questions everyone asks first, answered short. The long answers — your bill, the price, the subsidy and the KSEB approval — have a page each below, taken from the KSEB circular and the government portal rather than written from memory. They are useful whether you buy from Ficus or from anybody else.

The subsidy, plainly

₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW, ₹18,000 for the third, capped at ₹78,000. So 2 kW gets you ₹60,000 and 3 kW gets you ₹78,000 — and a 10 kW system gets you the same ₹78,000, because the cap sits at 3 kW. Every kilowatt above the third is bought at full price, which is worth knowing when you choose a size. Kerala is not a "special state", so the extra 10% you may read about does not apply here. The scheme closes on 31 March 2027.

It is paid to you after commissioning, into your bank account. Nobody deducts it at the shop, and an installer who offers to is not describing this scheme.

Who gets it, when the money arrives, the deadline, and the four steps to apply

What a system costs in Kerala

A 3 kW system typically comes to ₹2.10 lakh installed and a 5 kW to ₹3.10 lakh, before the subsidy — ₹70,000 per kW at 3 kW and ₹62,000 at 5 kW, because one inverter, one cable run and one day of labour cost much the same either way and get spread over more kilowatts. That is what Ficus normally install at, on a straightforward roof. The survey settles your own figure.

What 3 kW and 5 kW come to before and after the subsidy, what moves the price, and what a cheap quote leaves out

Got a 3KW inverter and panel setup installed last month. So far, it's producing close to 17-19 units daily, which is fantastic. I also received a cashback of ₹78,000 under the MNRE scheme, which made the deal even sweeter. Ficus Solar truly provides reliable service and excellent after sales support. Very happy with my choice!

Why our estimator quotes less than these customers report

Three things most installers will not tell you.

Your bill will not be zero.

The fixed charge, the electricity duty and the meter rent all survive net metering. On a 3 kW system covering a 300-unit household, the good months land near ₹70 — not nothing.

On-grid solar does not work during a power cut.

It disconnects on purpose, so it cannot backfeed a line someone is working on. If you want power in an outage you need a battery and a hybrid inverter. We fit both, and we will price them as a separate line on the quote — so you can see exactly what the backup costs on top of the solar, and drop it if it is not worth it to you.

Solar is not always the right first move.

Below about 150 units a month there is not much bill left for panels to remove, so the payback stretches out well past the usual three to five years. We will tell you that on the survey rather than after it.

Questions people actually ask.

Eight about your house. The ones about the tariff are on the bill calculator, the ones about money are on the savings page, and the paperwork is answered under the subsidy and under net metering.

How much subsidy will I get, and do you handle the application?

₹30,000 per kW to 2 kW, ₹18,000 for the third, capped at ₹78,000. We file the national portal application and the complete KSEB documentation. The scheme closes 31 March 2027.

Do you handle the KSEB approval and the net meter?

Yes — feasibility, the KSEB annexures, the portal application, inspection and the net metering agreement. Realistically 90 to 120 days. We supply the net meter ourselves rather than wait for KSEB to issue one, which saves a month of that; the ₹30 a month KSEB charges to rent it is payable either way.

Will it work during a power cut?

Not on its own. An on-grid system shuts down in an outage by design. Add a battery and a hybrid inverter if you need backup.

How much roof do I need?

About 80 sq ft per kW, shadow-free. So roughly 240 sq ft for 3 kW.

What if my roof is sheet, not concrete?

Both work, and both are in the photographs above — Karukutty is a trapezoidal sheet roof, Azhikode is tiled. Sheet roofs need a different mounting structure, and the purlin spacing gets checked on the survey.

Can I run an air conditioner on solar?

Yes, if the system is sized for it. A 1.5-ton AC is about 1,500 W, which is a meaningful share of a 3 kW system — tell us on the survey and we will size for it.

What panels and inverters do you use, and are they any good?

Panels from Adani, Waaree, Microtek, Exide, Rayzon and Panasonic; inverters from Microtek, Livguard, Waaree, V-Guard and Deye. The panel warranty is 25 years and the inverter 15 years — which is the answer that actually matters, because a brand name means very little next to what the manufacturer will stand behind and for how long. We will show you the specific model and its warranty document before you order, not after.

What happens after the installation — do you come back?

Yes. Service calls, cleaning and fault-finding on the systems we put up. It is the thing we are asked about most and the thing our reviews mention most, so we would rather you judged it from those than from us saying it.
