What is your KSEB billactually made of?

Put in the amount on your last bill and this page works out the units behind it, the slab you are in, what one more unit costs you, and how close you are to the step where the whole bill is repriced. Every rate comes from the KSEB tariff circular in force, not from an estimate.

നിങ്ങളുടെ ബിൽ തുക നൽകൂ. യൂണിറ്റ്, സ്ലാബ്, അടുത്ത യൂണിറ്റിന്റെ വില — എല്ലാം ഇവിടെ കാണാം.

Rates checked against the KSEB Tariff Revision Circular 2025–2027 on 15 September 2026. The order runs to 31 March 2027, so nothing below changes before then unless KSERC revises it.

₹348

What one extra unit costs a household sitting at 250 units a month. Not the unit — the bill.

250

Units a month. Cross that line and KSEB stops charging you band by band — one single rate is applied to every unit you used.

480

Units on a two-month bill is 240 a month. The bill is bi-monthly and the slabs are not, and that catches people out.

The bill decoder.

A KSEB domestic bill does not tell you the one thing that decides its size: which side of the 250-unit line your monthly consumption sits on. Work backwards from the amount, and it does.

Type in the total on your last bill and this reads it back as units, band, what you are really paying per unit, and how far you are from the next step. If the units are printed on your bill — they usually are, next to the meter reading — type those in instead. It is more exact that way.

Three-phase connections pay a higher fixed charge for the same units, so set the switch correctly. Nothing else differs.

Derived from the official KSEB tariff effective 1 April 2025. Check the units against your own bill — if they differ, type the units in directly. The chart moves with these figures.

Reading the chart. Monthly bill up the side, monthly units along the bottom. The line climbs smoothly while the tariff is telescopic. The five red risers are where it is not: at each one the bill jumps without the consumption doing anything unusual.

The green marker is you, placed from whatever is in the panel.

The KSEB domestic tariff, in full.

LT-1A, the domestic category almost every Kerala house is on. These are the rates in force from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2027.

Up to 250 units a month — charged band by band
Monthly units₹ per unitFixed charge, single phaseThree phase
0–503.35₹50₹130
51–1004.25₹85₹175

151–2007.20₹140₹215
201–2508.50₹160₹235
Each band is charged at its own rate, the way income tax works. A household using 240 units pays ₹3.35 for its first fifty units, not ₹8.50. KSEB calls this a telescopic tariff, and it is the reasonable half of the story.
Above 250 units a month — one rate on every unit

401–5008.25₹285₹285
above 5009.20₹310₹310
One rate, applied to every unit you used — including the first fifty. This is the part no national calculator gets right, because in most states the bands hold all the way up.

And what else is on the bill

The energy charge is the big number, but it is not the only one. A KSEB domestic bill is assembled like this:

Energy charge + fixed charge + electricity duty + meter rent + fuel surcharge + other charges − any government subsidy.

The electricity duty is 10% of the energy charge, so it rises with everything above it and cannot be avoided. Meter rent is small. Once you have solar the net meter is rented on top of it — what that costs, and what else stays on the bill.

250 യൂണിറ്റ് പ്രശ്നം

The 250-unit cliff: one extra unit, ₹348.

This is what makes a Kerala bill different from everyone else’s. It is not a sales line — it falls straight out of the two tables above.

A single-phase household using exactly 250 units a month is charged band by band: ₹3.35 for the first fifty units, ₹4.25 for the next fifty, up to ₹8.50 for the last. Add the ₹160 fixed charge and the 10% duty and the bill is ₹1,756 a month.

The same household using 251 units loses the bands. All 251 units are charged at ₹6.75 — including the first fifty, which cost ₹3.35 the month before. The fixed charge steps up from ₹160 to ₹220. The bill is ₹2,104.

One more fan through a Kerala summer will do it. So will a guest staying a fortnight.

Worked out from the two tariff tables above, by the same arithmetic that runs the calculator at the top of this page.

Which is why cutting a little, near a step, is worth a lot

Take a household on 310 units a month with an electric geyser using about 60 of them. Drop the geyser and they are at 250 — back inside the bands, and down a fixed-charge step at the same time.

310 units a month₹2,852
250 units a month₹1,756

Over a year₹13,150
Worth per unit removed₹18.26

₹18.26 a unit, against a top tariff of ₹9.20. That is the number to hold against any way of removing units, solar included: above a step, every unit you stop buying is worth far more than the tariff on the last line of your bill.

Why your bill is bi-monthly, and what that hides.

Almost nobody explains this correctly, and it is the reason most Kerala households have no idea which slab they are in.

The slabs are monthly. The bill is two-monthly. KSEB reads a domestic meter once every two months, and applies the monthly slabs to half the reading. So the 250-unit line, which decides everything, shows up on the paper you are holding as roughly 500 units — a number that appears nowhere in the tariff table.

That is why a household can sit one unit from a ₹348 step and never know it. They read 498 units off the bill, look at a slab table written in monthly figures, and draw no conclusion at all. Halve it first — which is what the 2 months / 1 month switch on the calculator does for you.

It also means the step is charged twice before you can react. A bi-monthly period that crosses the line prices both of its months on the non-telescopic scale, and you find out eight weeks later.

ചോദ്യങ്ങൾ

Questions about the numbers.

The ones about your house — roof type, power cuts, how much space — are answered on the main page.

My bill says 480 units. Which slab am I in?

ബില്ലിലെ യൂണിറ്റ് രണ്ടായി ഹരിക്കുക. അതാണ് സ്ലാബിന് എടുക്കുന്ന കണക്ക്.

Halve it. A domestic bill covers two months and the slabs are monthly, so 480 on the bill is 240 units a month — still inside the bands, and ten units from the step. Put 480 into the calculator with the period set to 2 months and it will show you exactly that.

Is the ₹348 figure real, or a sales line?

It falls straight out of the published tariff: ₹1,756 at 250 units, ₹2,104 at 251. You can check it against the two tables above, both of which are transcribed from the KSEB circular. It is arithmetic, not an opinion — and it is the reason this page exists.

How accurate is the bill-to-units calculation?

It solves the tariff backwards, so it is exact for the energy charge, the fixed charge and the duty — the three that make up nearly all of a domestic bill. It cannot know your meter rent, a fuel surcharge in that particular period or any arrears rolled into the amount, so treat it as close rather than perfect. If the units are printed on your bill, type those in instead and every figure downstream gets better.

What is the fixed charge, and does it change with what I use?

It changes with it, which surprises people who expect a standing charge to stand still. On a single-phase connection it runs from ₹50 a month at the bottom to ₹310 above 500 units, and it steps up with the slab — so crossing a line raises the fixed charge as well as repricing the units. Three-phase pays more for the same consumption. Both columns are in the tables above, and the calculator uses whichever applies to you.

What would solar do to this bill?

സോളാർ വെച്ചാൽ എത്ര ലാഭിക്കാം എന്ന് അടുത്ത പേജിൽ കാണാം.

More than the tariff alone suggests, if you are above 250 units — because cutting your billed units can carry you back over a step, and the whole bill reprices downward with it. What a system costs, what it generates through a Kerala monsoon and when it pays for itself are all on the cost and savings page, sized against the same bill you just decoded.

What you can do about that bill.

This page is the bill as it stands today. Three pages follow it — what solar would save, what the subsidy pays, and what KSEB needs before any of it — each written from the circular and the portal rather than from memory.
