The solar subsidy is real.It is not a discount at the shop.
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana pays a Kerala household up to ₹78,000 towards a rooftop system — into their own bank account, after the system is commissioned and inspected. You pay the installer the full price first. Anyone offering to "take the subsidy off" the quote is describing something other than this scheme, and it is worth asking what.
Every figure and every step on this page is from pmsuryaghar.gov.in, checked on 15 September 2026. Where the portal is silent, this page says so rather than filling the gap.
The most a household receives, and it is reached at 3 kW. Below that: ₹30,000 per kW to 2 kW, then ₹18,000 for the third.
When the scheme closes. A Kerala approval realistically takes 90 to 120 days, so late 2026 is not comfortable.
Days a Kerala approval realistically takes, start to finish. That is what makes the deadline closer than it looks.
എത്ര കിട്ടും
What the subsidy comes to.
Central Financial Assistance for residential rooftop solar, by system size. One table, and it is the whole of it.
| System | Subsidy | How it is arrived at |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kW | ₹30,000 | ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW |
| 2 kW | ₹60,000 | 2 × ₹30,000 |
| 3 kW | ₹78,000 | ₹60,000 + ₹18,000 for the third kW |
| 5 kW | ₹78,000 | capped |
| 10 kW | ₹78,000 | capped |
| Special states receive an additional 10% per kW. Kerala is not a special state, so that uplift does not apply here, whatever you may read. | ||
Which is why the cap decides the size
The cap lands at 3 kW and never moves again — a 5 kW system gets the same ₹78,000, and so does a 10 kW one. Every kilowatt past the third is bought at full price, and it earns back only what it takes off your own bill. Units you export are banked against next month rather than bought from you, so a system sized well past your consumption is paying full price for the units that earn least.
The national portal's own sizing guidance says the same thing more gently: 1–2 kW for a household using up to 150 units a month, 2–3 kW up to 300, and more than 3 kW above that. The estimator works out where your own consumption puts you, and what each size costs once this subsidy is taken off.
Who it is for
Households. The claim is tied to an electricity connection, not to a building — you enter your KSEB consumer number and the portal fetches the account against it. So the connection is the first thing to check: if it is not in the name of the person applying, settle that before anything else. It is far cheaper to fix in week one than in week ten.
Housing societies and resident welfare associations are covered under a separate part of the scheme, on different terms.
പണം എങ്ങനെ കിട്ടും
How and when the money reaches you.
This is the misconception worth owning, because getting it wrong changes what you budget and who you trust.
The subsidy is not taken off the installer’s quote. You pay the full price, the system is installed and inspected, and the money is then credited to your bank account. So what you need on the day is the whole price — ₹2.10 lakh for a typical 3 kW system — and the ₹78,000 comes afterwards.
An installer who offers to “take the subsidy off” is describing something else — usually their own discount dressed up, or a private promise to chase the claim and settle up later. Neither is this scheme. Ask which it is, and ask in writing.
If you are borrowing, it goes to the loan
A change worth knowing about. Since 14 August 2026, where the system is bought on a loan the subsidy is credited to the loan account rather than to you — it cuts what you owe instead of arriving as cash. Budget for that: in a loan case the ₹78,000 is not spending money. What that does to the instalment →
And the installer has to be registered
The system has to be installed by a vendor registered on the national portal, or the claim does not stand. That makes the registration number the single most useful thing to ask any installer for before you pay a deposit. Ficus’s own registrations are KSEB approved vendor and MNRE registered, and you should ask us to produce the number exactly as you would ask anybody else. An installer who cannot produce one is asking you to fund a claim that will not pay.
അവസാന തീയതി
The deadline: 31 March 2027.
We would rather point you at the government’s own countdown than be the ones telling you to hurry.
The scheme closes on 31 March 2027. The portal runs a live countdown on its own front page, so you do not have to take any installer’s word for it — ours included.
A Kerala approval realistically takes 90 to 120 days end to end, so an application started late in 2026 is not comfortable and one started in the new year is cutting it fine. That wait is not the portal being slow. It is the KSEB side: the feasibility check, the transformer question, the inspection and the net meter, each with its own queue. The four steps, and how long each really takes →
എങ്ങനെ അപേക്ഷിക്കാം
How to apply, in four steps.
The portal’s own order. Ficus files this paperwork for its customers, and it is written out here so you can do it yourself if you would rather.
Register on the national portal
pmsuryaghar.gov.in, using the mobile number registered against your electricity connection. OTP, then complete your profile. If the number on the KSEB account is not one you still use, fix that first — everything downstream keys off it.
Apply for rooftop solar
Choose state, district and distribution utility — KSEB — enter your consumer account number and fetch your details. The name on the application and the name on the connection have to agree.
Feasibility, then install
KSEB checks feasibility, including whether the transformer feeding your street can take it. Once approved, the system goes up, and it must be installed by a vendor registered on the national portal. Ask any installer for the registration number before you pay a deposit, including us.
Inspection, net meter, then the money
KSEB inspects, the net meter goes in, the net metering agreement is signed, and the subsidy is credited afterwards. This is the step that decides the 90-to-120-day timeline.
There are two applications, not one, and you need both: a set of annexures — 1, 2 and 3, filed at three different stages of the installation — goes to KSEB, and the subsidy application goes to the national portal. Filing one and assuming it covers the other is the most common way a Kerala application stalls quietly for a month.
ചോദ്യങ്ങൾ
Questions about the subsidy.
What it costs and what it saves are on the savings calculator; the KSEB half is on the net metering page.
Can I get the subsidy if I already have solar?
Adding to an existing system is a fresh application, and it reopens the inverter, the load on your connection and the net metering agreement — so treat it as a new job, not an extension. Whether the subsidy applies to the added capacity depends on what was claimed the first time, and that is a question for the portal rather than for any installer. Settle it before you order panels.
Is there a Kerala subsidy on top of the central one?
കേരളത്തിന് പ്രത്യേക അധിക സബ്സിഡി ഇല്ല.
Not an extra 10%, which is the version that circulates. That uplift is for the states and union territories the scheme designates as special, and Kerala is not one of them. If a scheme changes or a state announcement adds something, it will be on the portal and on the ANERT site before it is in a WhatsApp forward — and this page will say so, with the date it was checked.
How long until the money actually arrives?
After commissioning and inspection, not before, and the portal does not publish a guaranteed number of days for the credit itself. What is known is the part in front of it: 90 to 120 days in Kerala from application to net meter. Anyone quoting you a precise date for the money is quoting something they cannot see.
Can I claim it for a rented house, or a second property?
The application runs against a KSEB consumer account, so the name on that account is where this question gets settled — and it gets settled on the portal, not by an installer. Take the specifics there before you take a quote from anyone: a connection in someone else's name is not something a vendor can work around, and finding that out after a deposit is the expensive order to do it in.
Does the subsidy cover a battery?
The scheme this page describes is grid-connected rooftop solar — its own process ends in a net meter and a net metering agreement with KSEB. Battery backup is a separate purchase at full price and it changes the payback, so decide it on its own merits and confirm on the portal what the CFA will and will not fund before you budget around it. We would rather you checked than took our word for the boundary.
What if the scheme closes before my system is commissioned?
This is the real argument for not leaving it to the last quarter. The scheme's own date is 31 March 2027 and the Kerala approval chain is 90 to 120 days; the portal has not published what happens to an application in flight on that date, so the honest answer is that nobody selling you panels knows. Start early enough that the question does not arise.

What a system costs, and the KSEB approval.
The subsidy is one line of the arithmetic. The bill it works against, the price it comes off and the approval it waits on are the other three.

Both halves of it — the complete KSEB documentation and the application on the national portal — for customers anywhere in Kerala.
